The MetroTech Net represents a set of core ITS functions which together define an integrated and intelligent
corridor. Of principle importance is the IntelliSection, an intelligent intersection that is able to apply
analytic functions to points along surface streets. The technologies which embody the IntelliSection combine
to perform complex analysis of traffic operations within and among intersections and along traffic corridors.
An intelligent intersection, or IntelliSection, is tasked with the collection of traffic information within an
intersection. The MetroTech Net uses digital video analytics as the primary source for traffic information in order
to create a detailed view of current activities. This method of data collection and analysis via cameras placed in
the intersection provides the status (health) of an intersection through the use of digital video analytics.
Analysis results, presented as events and alerts, are structurally defined and broadcast to the Transportation
Management Center (TMC) in order to augment traffic based decision support. Using cameras as the primary traffic
sensor and digital video analytics over a wireless mesh network enables the MetroTech Net to be rapidly installed
with little impact to the roadway infrastructure and only minor additions to the TMC data center are needed. Other
sensors already installed within the traffic infrastructure can be integrated to provide greater awareness of traffic
activities.
The IntelliSection consists of multiple cameras, each focused on an approach, which continuously collect traffic related
digital video analytics. In this way, each camera acts as a multi-purpose sensor tasked with several traffic
management objectives. Data collection intervals can be as little as 10 seconds and as much as several hours, depending upon
factors such as network bandwidth, video storage requirements, and information demand.
Collection intervals can be quickly configured, in real time, per intersection by the MetroTech Net management tools.
Each camera (approach) can have up to six (6) designated traffic data collection zones. A collection zone represents
an area where the digital video analytics evaluates defined rules in order to create alerts and/or counts. These alerts
and counts are transmitted wirelessly to the central MetroTech Net service bus where additional analysis and storage occurs.
The IntelliSection enables traffic managers within the TMC to closely inspect traffic activities throughout the transportation
corridor through the unique application of:
- Networks of cameras which continuously collect traffic information.
- Digital Video Analytics for automobile and pedestrian activities.
- Wireless mesh networking as the communications infrastructure.
- Secondary analytics which perform more advanced behavioral analysis of traffic events and alerts.
- Video stream storage and manipulation in real-time or historically.
- Significant event bookmarking for later viewing or analysis.
- Integrated solution via an Enterprise Service Bus architecture.
