In the perspective of intelligent transportation all information gathered and analyzed is somewhat useless
without the proper means of making sense of it. The MetroTech Net utilizes an extensive set of traffic modeling
algorithms designed to work closely with all tiers of analytics provided by the Enterprise Service Bus. These
models provide greater calculation capabilities and are a natural extension of behavioral analysis and decision
strategies. The traffic modeling system grows in complexity and context as additional iterations are performed on
all traffic information available.
The MetroTech Net delivers detailed traffic projections through a constantly evolving Traffic Modeling System;
this model represents the transportation network as a collection of DVA derived objects which mirror traffic
activities. The model focuses on intelligent intersections (IntelliSections) as well as the surface streets that
connect them. This state-of-the-art set of software services also supports freeway links, so that a complete picture
of the monitored transportation corridor can be generated on demand.
The primary goal of iterative traffic modeling is simple in design; extrapolate point measurements from video
sensors into a consistent network-wide state. To achieve this goal the traffic model internally makes use of a
finite state machine of road network components (links and nodes) which are re-computed with aggregate traffic
measures generated from the live traffic feed at predefined intervals of time.
Topology information encoded in the model's transportation network is used to propagate traffic conditions between
instrumented roadway sections and to impute missing information from offline detectors. Empirical roadway capacity
values and simple volume/speed curves are used to estimate average link speeds between IntelliSections. Link capacities
can be updated based on real-time events so that link speeds remain accurate.
MetroTech Net leverages the practices encapsulated in Highway Capacity Manual (HCM) methods by incorporating
concepts and measures such as Capacity, Level of Service (LOS), Average Queue Length, and Volume over Capacity
(VoC) into all available analytics.
The MetroTech Net Traffic Model is the primary source of information for geospatial mapping operations making it
the most appropriate delivery method of traffic information to be visualized. In addition to visualization through
complex traffic modeling, this software service provides additional metrics to the behavioral analysis operations
as an information support system. The traffic model represents the core delivery mechanism for traffic engineering
functions and is utilized by the MetroTech Net as such.
